Frequently Asked Questions

What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

Dental hygienists are preventive care specialists with advanced education and hands-on training in nonsurgical gum therapy. Our focus is on preventing oral health problems before they begin and helping you maintain a healthy, comfortable smile long term. Assessment and Personalized Planning

  • Review your medical and dental history
  • Assess your teeth, gums, bite, and oral tissues
  • Create an individualized care plan with your comfort, goals, and consent in mind

Clinical Care and Prevention

  • Professional dental cleanings (scaling and debridement)
  • Application of fluoride, sealants, and desensitizing agents when appropriate
  • Personalized oral hygiene and nutrition education to support home care

Ongoing Care and Referrals

  • Monitor progress at every visit
  • Adjust care plans as your needs change
  • Coordinate referrals to dentists, specialists, or physicians when needed

Yes — absolutely. Cleanings (hygiene), exams, and x-rays (dentist) are separate services. Most insurance plans allow:

  • Hygiene care with a dental hygienist
  • Exams and x-rays with a dentist
  • Services to be completed at different offices

You can do both — and many patients already do.

Yes. Dental hygienists and dentists have different but complementary roles. They work together to support your oral health.

Most dental hygiene services are covered by insurance. We also offer direct billing when available. Coverage depends on your individual plan, and we are always happy to help you check your benefits.
